ABOUT

Rationale and Necessity
of the Project

According to the World Drug Report 2023, the global fight against drug abuse remains a critical challenge, threatening public health, safety, and social stability worldwide. The surge in drug trafficking and consumption fuels crime, violence, and societal disintegration, impacting families, communities, and nations alike. Among the various substances, methamphetamine, particularly in the form of Yaba, stands out as a growing regional crisis, especially in Southeast Asia.

Thailand faces a particularly acute challenge. Since the 1990s, methamphetamine consumption has surged, predominantly among youth under 20. In 2022, the Office of the Narcotics Control Board (ONCB) documented over 300,000 drug-related cases, with about 75% involving Yaba. As of early 2024, over 200,000 individuals received treatment, with methamphetamine accounting for 80% of cases. Moreover, more than half of Thailand’s prison population in 2023 were drug offenders, predominantly linked to methamphetamine.

Thailand’s strategic location—bordering Myanmar, Laos, and Cambodia—positions it as both a transit hub and a battleground in regional drug trafficking. Seizures in 2022 surpassed 200 million pills of Yaba—the highest ever recorded. The emergence of new threats, including heroin, ketamine, and synthetic compounds, further complicates the situation.

Addressing this urgent issue requires a concerted, multidisciplinary effort involving policymakers, researchers, law enforcement, and community organizations across borders. The upcoming conference aims to foster this collaboration and drive impactful solutions regionally and globally.
